The Kilobyte’s Gambit

Is it just me or is everyone getting into Chess all of a sudden. Maybe it’s just odd to me, but I could have sworn I saw my younger watching a breakdown video of a popular YouTuber who plays Chess. I would care to venture that the Queen’s Gambit (On Netflix) is also a factor here. If you haven’t seen it you, give it a go. It’s worth the watch.

Alas, I digress but here’s something fun I found that ties this all together. Welcome to the Kylobyte’s Gambit.

Gosh, I love the retro look of this app, which you can play at https://vole.wtf/kilobytes-gambit/. This is obviously inspired by the Queen’s Gambit series. But it actually is a fully functional Chess Game. So what of the 1024 bytes of Javascript? The game runs a modified version of Óscar Toledo G’s 1k chess, which is 1.25kb to be accurate. The smaller engine size and rolled back graphics are what give you the game :) All in All, this all runs within 1024 of bytes of JS.

Now, I’m no expert chess player, or particularly good. But this is fairly responsive with move sets. And supposedly, my opponent thinks four moves ahead which doesn’t give me much calm haha. One thing I did notice in terms of losing to this engine, was on a successful checkmate, there is graphic saying you lost which is kind. How you realize it’s over is that, you are left with no available moves. But it’s a very nice single page application with a restart function, and some info, definitely check it out
